This half day, interactive workshop provides the whole dental team with an update on recent developments in infection prevention and will support with implementation of successful protocols for efficiencies in everyday practice.

The workshop outlines recent changes and recommendations with specific focus on instrument management efficiencies, as well as providing an overview on infection prevention and sterilisation for those new to the industry.

Infection Prevention & Control: Strategies for Success

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following:

  • Discuss the basic principles of sterilisation and disinfection, including the importance of cleaning an item before a process is used.
  • Understand and practically apply Standard (Universal) Precautions.
  • Highlight protocols required for successful sterilisation.
  • Highlight key principles for dental unit waterlines and evacuation systems.

AS/NZS 4187:2014, AS/NZS 4815:2006, ADA Guidelines for Infection Control, DCNZ Infection Prevention and Control Practice and/or NZDA Infection Control Code of Practice (as applicable)

  • Why are Infection Prevention and Control important in dentistry?
  • Standard and Risk-based precautions
  • Policy and Procedures manuals – how, why and the importance of team implementation
  • Hand Hygiene – protect patients, protect yourself
  • Personal Hygiene and Personal Protective Equipment requirements and use
  • Reprocessing and safe handling of used instruments (reusable medical devices)
  • Pre-cleaning for successful sterilisation – the critical step
  • Disinfection vs. detergency
  • Surface management protocols – clinical contact surfaces and general environment
  • Instrument reprocessing – the most efficient overall process
  • Sterilisation – packaging, loading, monitoring requirements and recording the process
  • Quality Management and Validation – equipment and the overall sterilisation process

  • Discuss basic principles of sterilisation and disinfection, including the importance of pre-cleaning.
  • Understand and practically apply Standard (Universal) Precautions.
  • Describe key protocols required for successful sterilisation.
  • Highlight key principles for dental unit waterlines and evacuation systems.
  • Know the correct Personal Protective Equipment required and how to don and remove items correctly.
  • Understand and demonstrate proper Hand Hygiene and undertake a Hand Hygiene audit.
  • Know the requirements to perform a Performance Re-Qualification.

Content is based on AS/NZS 4187:2014, AS/NZS 4815:2006, ADA Guidelines for Infection Control, NHMRC Guidelines for Infection Prevention and Control in Healthcare, DCNZ Infection Prevention and Control Practice and/or NZDA Infection Control Code of Practice, (as applicable)

  • Improving workflow in instrument reprocessing and patient changeover
  • Reprocessing and safe handling of used instruments (reusable medical devices)

  • PPE – appropriate choice of products, correct wearing, mask permeability testing, glove porosity
  • Surface management protocols – clinical contact surfaces and general environment
  • Dental Waterline Management – how to test, treat and maintain
  • Sterilisation – packaging, loading, monitoring requirements and recording the process
  • Performance Requalification – annual in practice process and documentation
  • Management and Performance testing for the ultrasonic units
  • Impression management
Advanced Infection Prevention: Management of the Non-Clinical Aspect of Infection Prevention & Control

In this hands-on, practical workshop we will:

  • Develop and write an IPC job description
  • Write an Infection Prevention Management Plan for your practice
  • Managing an infection prevention breach
  • Discuss strategies for managing difficult conversations for non-compliance within a team
  • Implementation of behavioural change and how this supports a team managed approach
  • Training and Development methods to meet the ongoing educational requirements of your team for infection prevention
  • Resource development – how do you keep on top of the changing infection prevention requirements
  • The steps to a validated process and on-going performance re-qualification
  • Implementation of a Quality Managed approach and Risk Management Strategy
  • Undertaking, reviewing and delivering a practice audit
